The Notre Dame Exoneration Justice Clinic (EJC) strongly condemns this morning’s execution of Joseph Corcoran—the first execution in Indiana in 15 years. The tenants of Christianity, and Catholic doctrine specifically, recognize the dignity and sanctity of human life without exception. The Catholic Church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that “the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person[.]” The death penalty violates that fundamental principle. As Pope Francis has proclaimed, “Capital punishment offers no justice to victims, but rather encourages revenge. And it prevents any possibility of undoing a possible miscarriage of justice.” It is the EJC’s sincere hope that Indiana swiftly abandons the use of such a cruel, barbaric, medieval, and irrevocable method of punishment.
