The Notre Dame Exoneration Justice Clinic (EJC) strongly condemns Tennessee’s attempted execution of Christa Pike. The tenants of Christianity, and Catholic doctrine specifically, recognize the dignity and sanctity of human life without exception. The death penalty violates that fundamental principle. As Pope Francis has proclaimed, “Capital punishment offers no justice to victims, but rather encourages revenge. And it prevents any possibility of undoing a possible miscarriage of justice.” The Catholic Church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that “the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person[.]” All Catholics should therefore oppose and condemn the death penalty. It is the EJC’s sincere hope that all states swiftly abandon the use of such a cruel, barbaric, medieval, and irrevocable method of punishment.
